The Aichi M6A1 Seiran was one of the most operationally unique aircraft of the Second World War — a purpose-built submarine-launched attack floatplane designed exclusively to strike the Panama Canal. Carried folded in the 30-metre hangar tube of the I-400 class submarine, the Seiran could be assembled and catapult-launched in under seven minutes. Only 28 were completed before Japan's surrender. The sole wartime deployment, in August 1945 against US carrier forces at Ulithi Atoll, was aborted upon receipt of the surrender order; the I-400's crew jettisoned all three aircraft before returning to port rather than be captured with them aboard.
