The A-4E was the most capable and widely produced single-seat Skyhawk variant, entering USN service in 1962 with a more powerful J52 engine, additional weapons pylons, and avionics improvements over earlier marks. It served as the Navy and Marine Corps' primary light attack aircraft throughout the Vietnam War, flying from carrier decks and shore bases in the strike, close air support, and forward air control roles. The type's small delta wing and lightweight design made it highly manoeuvrable and difficult to intercept at low level.
