The Panzer II was conceived as a stopgap training tank while the Panzer III and IV were being developed, but shortages of both meant it ended up carrying the weight of the early blitzkrieg campaigns. Armed with a 2cm KwK 30 autocannon and protected by no more than 15mm of armour, the Ausf.A through C variants formed the numerical backbone of the panzer divisions in Poland and France. Combat in Poland exposed how thin that armour was, and many vehicles that fought in France in 1940 had 20mm appliqué plates bolted to the hull front, superstructure and turret face.
