The Char B1 bis was among the best protected tanks in the world in 1940, with 60mm armour and a pair of guns: a 75mm howitzer set in the hull front and a 47mm in the one-man APX turret. Aiming the hull gun meant turning the whole 32 tonne tank, which the Naeder hydrostatic steering system allowed with surprising precision. German crews found their anti-tank guns bouncing off it, and the type gave a good account of itself in May and June 1940. What defeated it was doctrine, fuel and a commander who had to load, aim and fire while running the tank.
