Japan's Imperial Navy relied heavily on a range of small auxiliary warships to maintain control of its vast Pacific theatre of operations. The Type 19 Minesweeper was a workhorse of harbour and coastal defence, while the Type 13 Sub Chaser provided anti-submarine screening for convoys and anchorages. The Hirashima-class Netlayer served in the specialist role of deploying and maintaining anti-submarine netting at fleet anchorages and strategic ports.
