The Citroën 2CV was conceived in the 1930s to a brief that has become legend: carry two farmers and a sack of potatoes across a ploughed field without breaking the eggs. What emerged in 1948 was a masterpiece of minimalist engineering, with an air-cooled flat twin, interconnected suspension of extraordinary compliance, and a roll-back canvas roof that saved the cost of a steel pressing. More than 3.8 million were built over 42 years, and the little Citroën became as much a symbol of France as anything on four wheels.
