The Ferrari F189, internally the Type 640, was John Barnard's answer to the 1989 return to naturally aspirated engines, and it introduced the semi-automatic paddle shift gearbox that every Formula 1 car has used since. Its 3.5 litre V12 sat behind a strikingly narrow, wasp-waisted monocoque with a needle nose, and Nigel Mansell won on the car's debut in Brazil before reliability problems dogged the rest of the year. The late season specification modelled here, as raced at Estoril where Gerhard Berger took the win, featured a revised airbox drawing engine intake air from above the cockpit and a larger front wing.
