Audi’s R18 e-tron quattro was a diesel hybrid. It paired a 4.0 litre V6 TDI driving the rear wheels with a front-axle energy recovery system, which gave it all-wheel drive out of corners. By 2015 Audi had won Le Mans 13 times, but that year Porsche’s 919 Hybrids came back strong. The #8 car of Lucas di Grassi, Loïc Duval and Oliver Jarvis fought through the 24 hours and finished fourth.
