Pfalz Flugzeugwerke of Speyer had built Roland and Morane-Saulnier designs under licence before chief engineer Rudolph Gehringer designed its own fighter in early 1917. The Pfalz D.III had a slim, streamlined plywood monocoque fuselage and a 160 hp Mercedes D.III engine. Its twin Spandau machine guns sat buried inside the fuselage, which looked elegant but made clearing gun jams difficult. It reached the front in the summer of 1917 and flew alongside Albatros and Fokker fighters with many Jastas, often in colourful personal markings. Around 260 were built before the improved D.IIIa replaced it.
