The Lockheed C-141 was the USAF's first purpose built jet transport and the backbone of Military Airlift Command from 1965 onward. The original A model kept running out of cabin space before it ran out of lift, so Lockheed stretched the fleet by 23 feet and added inflight refuelling to create the C-141B. Starlifters flew everything from Vietnam era medical evacuations to Antarctic supply runs, and one aircraft carried home the first American POWs released from Hanoi in 1973.
