The P-38J was the definitive production variant of Lockheed's twin-boom Lightning, entering service in August 1943 and distinguished by its characteristic chin intercooler fairings. Armed with four .50 calibre machine guns and a single 20mm cannon, it was the mount of the two highest-scoring American aces of the war — Richard Bong and Thomas McGuire — and served in every theatre from Europe to the Pacific.
