The P-38 was the definitive production variant of Lockheed's distinctive twin-boom fighter, distinguished from earlier marks by its "chin" intercooler fairings and increased fuel capacity. It was the mount of several leading USAAF aces including Richard Bong and Thomas McGuire, and operated across the Pacific, Mediterranean, and European theatres from 1943 onward.
