The Leopard 2A6 is the primary variant of the German Leopard 2 series in current NATO service, distinguished by its longer 120mm L55 smoothbore gun providing significantly greater muzzle velocity than the earlier L44. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Germany and other NATO nations supplied Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukrainian forces. Ukrainian crews applied field-expedient Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armour bricks to the hull and turret sides for additional protection, along with white cross recognition markings and Ukrainian national insignia — creating a visually distinctive configuration unique to the conflict.
