Mickey Thompson's Challenger I was one of the most ambitious land speed record vehicles ever built by an American, powered by four supercharged Pontiac V8 engines driving all four wheels through a purpose-built transmission system. On September 9, 1960, Thompson drove Challenger I to a one-way run of 406.6 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, becoming the first American to exceed 400 mph on land. A mechanical failure on the return run prevented the establishment of an official two-way average record, but the achievement cemented Thompson's reputation as one of the most inventive and fearless figures in motorsport history.
