The Zeppelin NT (Neue Technologie, or "New Technology") is a semi-rigid helium-filled airship developed by Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH in Friedrichshafen, Germany -- the direct successor company to the original Zeppelin organisation. Construction of the prototype began in 1995 and its maiden flight took place in September 1997, making it the first new Zeppelin to fly since the Second World War. Measuring 75 metres in length with a carbon-fibre and aluminium internal framework, the NT can carry up to 14 passengers and cruise at 125 km/h. The hull's large surface area made it a natural advertising platform, and a succession of sponsor liveries have been carried by the fleet since commercial operations began in 2001.
