The Handley Page Halifax was the second of Bomber Command’s four-engine heavies, and with 6,176 built it carried a huge share of the night bombing offensive alongside the Lancaster. The Halifax was especially important to Canada. The RCAF’s No. 6 Group flew it in large numbers, and 405 “Vancouver” Squadron, the first RCAF bomber squadron overseas, took its Mk.IIs into action in 1942. Later Mk.II Series 1A aircraft got a streamlined Perspex nose and a low-drag dorsal turret, which improved performance over the early boxy-nosed versions.
