In July 1941, Soviet leaders ordered extra armour plates bolted to the front, sides and turret of KV heavy tanks to counter improved German anti-tank guns. The work was done on KV-1 tanks at the Kirov Plant in Leningrad, and the result was called the KV-1E, for "Ekranirovanny" or "screened." More than 200 were converted, and most fought in the defence of Leningrad, armed with the 76.2 mm F-32 gun and three DT machine guns behind up to 110 mm of armour.
