The Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden ("Violet Lightning") was developed as a land-based fighter conversion of the N1K1 Kyofu floatplane, retaining the mid-mounted wing and distinctive long undercarriage of its seaplane ancestor. Powered by the Nakajima NK9H Homare 21 radial producing 1,900 hp, the Shiden proved an effective interceptor in the hands of skilled pilots, performing well against Allied aircraft during the defence of the Philippines and at Okinawa. The N1K1-J was produced in 1,007 examples before being superseded by the improved Shiden-Kai. Original new tool from Otaki, early 1970s; OT2-7-500 is the 1980 boxing. Series No. 4. Canadian distribution by Hobbycraft Canada.
