The McDonnell F2H Banshee was a single-seat, twin-engine carrier jet flown by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from 1948, and one of the principal American fighters of the Korean War, where its straight wings and strong high-altitude performance suited it to B-29 escort and ground-attack work. Powered by a pair of Westinghouse J34 turbojets and nicknamed the "Banjo" by its crews, the type flew throughout the conflict without a single air-to-air loss. The Banshee holds a Canadian footnote as well: the F2H-3 was the only jet fighter ever operated by the Royal Canadian Navy, serving aboard HMCS Bonaventure until 1962.
