The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was the USAF's primary strike aircraft during the early years of the Vietnam War, designed as a supersonic nuclear strike platform and subsequently pressed into conventional bombing operations against North Vietnam. The F-105D was the definitive single-seat variant, capable of Mach 2 and able to carry an 8,000 lb internal bomb load plus external stores, conducting the majority of Rolling Thunder strike missions from bases in Thailand between 1965 and 1970. Losses to North Vietnamese air defences were severe, with over 330 F-105s lost in combat during the conflict.
