The Douglas DC-3 transformed commercial aviation after its 1935 debut, becoming the first airliner able to operate profitably carrying passengers alone. Eastern Air Lines was a major early operator, flying the type as part of its "Great Silver Fleet" on routes across the eastern United States. Rugged and long-lived, the DC-3 remains one of the most significant aircraft in transport history, with many still flying decades later.
