The E-8 Joint STARS gave ground commanders what AWACS gave air commanders: a wide-area radar picture, in this case of moving vehicles and terrain rather than aircraft. Built on refurbished Boeing 707 airframes, the type carried a 12 metre canoe fairing under the forward fuselage housing the side-looking phased array radar. Two development aircraft were rushed into Operation Desert Storm in 1991 before the programme was formally complete, tracking Iraqi armour movements at night and in weather. Minicraft's 1/144 release was the first plastic kit of the E-8 in any scale, with two marking options covering a Desert Storm E-8A and a later Georgia Air National Guard aircraft.
