The Douglas DC-3 was the aircraft that made scheduled airline travel pay its own way, carrying twenty-one passengers in comfort at a time when most airliners relied on mail subsidies to survive. American Airlines drove the design, asking Douglas for a widened sleeper version of the DC-2 for its transcontinental routes, and put the type into service in 1936. The polished natural metal finish with the orange cheatline and the AA lightning flash became one of the most recognisable airline schemes of the era.
