Douglas was late to the jet age and never caught the 707 in sales, but the DC-8 gave the airlines a genuinely long-legged four-engine narrowbody and stayed in service for decades. Delta was one of the launch customers and flew the first DC-8 revenue service in September 1959, on the same day as United. The Series 30 was the intercontinental version with JT4A engines and a strengthened airframe, and the -33 variant is shown here in Delta's classic widow's peak scheme.
