The Grumman F6F Hellcat was the U.S. Navy's primary carrier-based fighter from 1943 through the end of the Pacific War, designed specifically to counter the Mitsubishi Zero by prioritising pilot protection, firepower, and straight-line speed over manoeuvrability. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, the Hellcat achieved a kill ratio of approximately 19:1 against Japanese aircraft and was credited with destroying more enemy aircraft than any other Allied naval fighter. The F6F-3 was the initial production variant, followed by the refined F6F-5 which incorporated improved armour, a more powerful engine variant, and provision for rockets and bombs.
