The SU-76M was the second most produced Soviet armoured vehicle of the war after the T-34, with 17,258 built from 1943. It married the automotive components of the T-70 light tank to the excellent dual purpose ZiS-3 76mm gun, giving infantry units a mobile weapon that could handle bunkers and armour alike. Early SU-76s had an enclosed fighting compartment that proved cramped and nearly unworkable; the M variant opened the roof and rear, which improved visibility and gun servicing enormously at the cost of crew protection. Soviet crews gave it a string of unflattering nicknames, but it did the job right through to Berlin.
