The Fairey Seafox was a light catapult-launched floatplane operated by the Royal Navy from cruisers and armed merchant cruisers for fleet reconnaissance and spotting duties. It is best known for its role in the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939, where a Seafox from HMS Ajax spotted for the cruiser squadron during the action against the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. Though underpowered and slow even by contemporary standards, it served reliably in its intended role through the early war years.
