The Henschel Hs 126 was the Luftwaffe's standard army co-operation and tactical reconnaissance aircraft from 1938, replacing the older He 46 in frontline service. A parasol-wing monoplane with an open rear cockpit, it equipped Aufklärungsgruppen (reconnaissance groups) throughout the campaigns in Poland, France, the Balkans, North Africa, and the Eastern Front. By the time of Barbarossa it was already being phased out in favour of the Fw 189, but continued in secondary and partisan-suppression roles into the mid-war period.
