Chrysler introduced the 426 Hemi as a race-only engine in February 1964, purpose-built for NASCAR competition and drag racing. Fitted with 12.5:1 compression pistons, an aggressive racing camshaft, aluminium heads, and a cross-ram dual-carburettor intake, the 1964-1965 Race Hemi was too extreme for street use and was sold strictly for competition. Its dominance on the NASCAR circuit was so complete that the sanctioning body changed its rules the following season to limit its use.
