The T-34/76 Model 1942 introduced a new welded hexagonal turret that simplified production while improving crew space over earlier cast versions. By 1942 the T-34 was being produced in enormous numbers across factories relocated east of the Urals, and the Model 1942 saw intensive action at Stalingrad and during the broader Soviet winter counteroffensives. Though outgunned by the Tiger I when it appeared, the T-34's combination of sloped armour, wide tracks, and reliable diesel engine kept it competitive against the bulk of German armour it faced.
