The North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the most widely used Allied medium bombers of the Second World War, named after airpower advocate Billy Mitchell. The early B and C variants are best remembered for the Doolittle Raid of April 1942, when sixteen B-25Bs launched from the carrier USS Hornet to strike Tokyo, the first American attack on the Japanese home islands. Rugged and versatile, the Mitchell served on every major front in level bombing, ground attack, and anti-shipping roles.
