The Mil Mi-24, known in the West as Hind, combined a heavily armoured gunship front end with a rear cabin able to carry eight troops, a combination no Western attack helicopter attempted. The Hind-D introduced the stepped tandem cockpit with a chin turret mounting a four barrel 12.7mm machine gun, and stub wings carrying rocket pods and anti-tank missiles. It saw heavy use in Afghanistan through the 1980s and was widely exported across the Warsaw Pact and beyond.
