The Opel Kadett was launched in 1936 as an affordable small car, and the restyled K38 of 1938 was built in large numbers before civilian production ended. Many were impressed into service as light staff cars and ran on every front alongside the heavier Wehrmacht types. The tooling went to the Soviet Union as reparations after the war, where the design continued in production as the Moskvitch 400.
