The Scammell Pioneer was one of the great British heavy tractors of the Second World War. It was designed for off-road haulage in the colonies before the war, and its walking-beam rear bogie and pivoting front axle gave it remarkable cross-country ability for its size. The R100 artillery tractor version, powered by a Gardner 6LW diesel, towed the heaviest guns in the British arsenal, including the 60-pounder, the 6-inch howitzer and the 7.2-inch howitzer. It served from France in 1940 through North Africa, Italy and Northwest Europe, and it earned a reputation for being slow but almost unstoppable.
