William Avery “Billy” Bishop of Owen Sound, Ontario, became Canada’s top ace of the First World War, with 72 victories. Flying Nieuport 17 B1566 with No. 60 Squadron RFC in the spring of 1917, he scored quickly. On 2 June 1917 he attacked a German aerodrome alone, which earned him the Victoria Cross. The nimble French-built Nieuport 17 carried a Lewis gun on a mount above the upper wing, firing over the propeller, and it was one of the best Allied fighters of 1916 and 1917.
