The Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 was France's primary single-seat fighter at the outbreak of World War II, stemming from a 1934 French Air Ministry requirement for a modern monoplane fighter. Over 1,000 were ordered by March 1938, making it the most numerous French fighter of the war. The type saw service not only with France but also with Finland and several other nations.
