The Northrop P-61B Black Widow was the United States’ first purpose-built night fighter of World War II and one of the most distinctive twin-boom aircraft ever built. Designed around the bulky SCR-720 airborne interception radar, it was a large twin-engine aircraft operated by a crew of three: pilot, radar operator, and gunner. The P-61B variant introduced improvements over earlier versions, including a lengthened nose section to house upgraded radar equipment and the reintroduction of the dorsal turret on late-production aircraft, giving it significant defensive firepower. The type served in both the European and Pacific theaters, where it was effective in intercepting enemy aircraft at night and in poor visibility conditions, often operating independently deep behind front lines.
This is HobbyBoss kit No. 83211, a 1/32 scale model of the P-61B Black Widow. It is one of HobbyBoss’s largest aircraft kits, with an extensive parts breakdown covering the full airframe, detailed cockpit and radar operator’s station, twin engines, and full weapon systems including the internal gun bay. The kit is engineered with large wing and fuselage assemblies and includes a mix of plastic, photo-etched, and flexible materials for finer details such as seatbelts and ammunition belts. The model is known for its impressive size and presence once completed, making it a centerpiece kit for large-scale WWII aircraft enthusiasts.
