The M-1E1 Abrams was the prototype development of the American M1 main battle tank, replacing the original 105mm rifled gun with the 120mm smoothbore weapon shared with West Germany's Leopard 2. It also added frontal armour improvements and other upgrades, forming the basis of the M1A1 that entered mass production and served with the US Army and Marine Corps. Powered by a gas-turbine engine, the Abrams family became the backbone of American armour for decades.
