The F4U-1 was the first production version of Vought's gull-winged Corsair, instantly recognizable by its heavily framed "birdcage" canopy. Entering service in 1942, it became one of the most effective US Navy and Marine Corps fighters of the Pacific war, prized for its speed and firepower. The early birdcage variant preceded the raised cockpit and blown canopy of later F4U-1A and subsequent marks.
