The Bf 109E "Emil" was the first mass-produced version of the Bf 109. It was powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine, and the E-3 was armed with two MG FF 20mm wing cannon and two MG 17 machine guns. In spring 1938 the Condor Legion asked for the new type, and E-series aircraft reached Spain early in 1939, just as the Civil War was ending. About 30 survivors were handed over to the new Spanish Air Force, where they stayed in service until the early 1950s.
