The Grumman TBF Avenger entered US Navy service in 1942 and first saw action at Midway, going on to become one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of the Second World War. Combat experience showed the need for more forward firepower, so the TBF/TBM-1C gained a .50 cal machine gun in each wing, entering production in July 1943 and reaching squadrons in late 1943. Grumman-built aircraft were designated TBF and General Motors-built examples TBM, and Hasegawa tooled this kit new in 1995.
