The P-40N was the final major production version of the Curtiss fighter, lightened for improved climb and speed and fitted with a cut down rear fuselage and enlarged rear glazing for better visibility. More than 5,200 were built, making it the most numerous P-40 variant of all. It served with USAAF units across the Pacific and the China Burma India theatre, and with Commonwealth squadrons including the Royal Australian Air Force, which knew the type as the Kittyhawk Mk IV.
