By 1943, the Zero's dominance over the Pacific was fading as newer Allied fighters closed the performance gap. The Type 52 variant addressed this with a shortened wingspan, redesigned engine cowling, and a single thrust-type exhaust pipe to boost top speed to approximately 565 km/h. A dedicated night fighter variant, the Otsu, replaced the standard right-side 7.7mm gun with a second 13mm machine gun to improve firepower during nocturnal interception operations.
