The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior was one of the largest and heaviest aircraft ever to operate from a carrier — nicknamed "the Whale" — designed in the late 1940s as the Navy's carrier-based nuclear strategic bomber and first flown in October 1952. As ballistic missiles took over the strategic role, the airframe found long second careers in other duties; the KA-3B was a dedicated tanker conversion, with about 85 A-3Bs rebuilt with a fixed hose-reel refuelling unit and their bombing equipment removed. These tankers gave extensive service in Vietnam, recovering many fuel-short aircraft. This boxing models a KA-3B of VAK-308 "Griffins."
