The P-51B and C were the first Merlin-powered Mustang variants to enter USAAF service over Europe, transforming the strategic bombing campaign by providing long-range escort coverage all the way to Berlin and back from bases in England. The distinctive blue nose markings belonged to the 352nd Fighter Group — known as the "Blue Nosed Bastards of Bodney" — one of the Eighth Air Force's most decorated fighter groups, producing multiple aces. The B and C variants differed only in production plant, the B built at Inglewood and the C at Dallas, and both featured the framed greenhouse canopy with options for the British Malcolm hood retrofit.
