The F-15E Strike Eagle took the airframe of the world's most successful air superiority fighter and turned it into a long range, all weather interdiction aircraft. Conformal fuel tanks moulded to the fuselage sides freed the wing pylons for weapons while extending range, and a second crew position for a weapon systems officer handled the new synthetic aperture radar and LANTIRN targeting system. Boeing's demonstrator appeared at the 1986 Farnborough show in green camouflage surrounded by an impressive spread of ordnance, and the type entered US Air Force service in 1988. It has been in demand ever since, over Iraq, the Balkans, Afghanistan and Syria.
