The F/A-18 Hornet was developed from Northrop’s YF-17 and entered U.S. Navy and Marine Corps service in the early 1980s. It was built as a true multi-role aircraft, equally capable as a fighter and as a strike aircraft. The two-seat F/A-18B, originally designated TF-18A, kept full combat capability while adding a second cockpit for training. The U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, better known as TOPGUN, was based at NAS Miramar, California. It flew Hornets as adversary aircraft to train fleet fighter pilots in air combat tactics, and some of its jets wore eye-catching special schemes. This limited-edition Hasegawa kit builds a gloss black F/A-18B, “00”, of TOPGUN at NAS Miramar, with “TOPGUN” titles on the fuselage and centreline fuel tank.
