Chrysler introduced the 426 Hemi in 1964 as a purpose-built racing engine, dominating NASCAR and drag strips with its hemispherical combustion chamber design and 425 horsepower output. It proved so dominant that NASCAR changed its rules the following season to limit its use. A street version followed for 1966, powering iconic Mopar muscle cars including the Charger, Coronet, and Plymouth Barracuda through 1971.
