The Leopard 1A1A1 was a mid-life upgrade of the West German Bundeswehr's standard main battle tank, distinguishing itself from earlier Leopard 1 variants by the addition of external turret armour cladding panels (Turmverkleidung) designed to improve protection against shaped-charge warheads. The upgrade was applied from the late 1970s onward and became the most visually distinctive version of the Leopard 1 family in German service. The Leopard 1 served as the Bundeswehr's primary tank from its introduction in 1965 through the 1990s.

Kit 8073 was the final release in ESCI's original 8000-series armour range (1974--1986) and was among the first ESCI kits to feature hard plastic individual-link tracks.
