The Hawker Tempest Mk.V was the fastest low-level piston-engined aircraft in RAF service during the Second World War, entering combat in April 1944 with Nos. 3 and 486 (RNZAF) Squadrons as part of 150 Wing. Its exceptional low-altitude speed made it the preferred RAF interceptor against V-1 flying bombs — Tempest squadrons accounted for some 638 of the 1,846 V-1s destroyed by aircraft. Deployed to the Continent from September 1944, Tempests of 122 Wing at Volkel proved formidable in the air superiority and armed reconnaissance roles and scored multiple kills against Me 262 jet fighters.
